Sbu Shongwe from Breyten rocking the airwaves with his sports show on Touch HD

He created, produces and hosts his show ‘The Zone with Sbu Shongwe’ on Touch HD

Mr Sbusiso Shongwe’s star just keeps on shining.

The producer, actor and disc jockey is rocking the airwaves with his own sports show on Touch HD radio and with his many projects about to take off, he is undoubtedly waving the Msukaligwa flag high.

Born and bred in the dusty streets of KwaZanele in Breyten, Mr Shongwe is from humble beginnings and is proud to call Breyten home.

Raised by strong women, his mother and grandmother, Mr Shongwe completed his secondary education at Carolina Combined School with the help of his uncle.

While pursuing a law degree at the University of Witswatersrand (Wits), Mr Shongwe fell in love with storytelling and the media industry in general.

A lover of sports, especially basketball, he actively pursued a career in the media industry and approached Touch HD radio to pitch his idea for a sports segment on the online radio platform.

“I saw something that was lacking in radio and how people spoke about sports and so I found a correlation between sports, music and fashion, approached Touch HD and they approved,” Mr Shongwe said.

A few months later, Touch HD approached him to host an hour-long sports show and the rest is history.

Mr Shongwe is currently working as a sports producer and works closely with the National Basketball Association (NBA) and various other television channels, creating

productions for television and radio, centered around his favourite sport.

His involvement in the sport led to him visiting various countries including Kenya and the United States.

He created, produces and hosts his show ‘The Zone with Sbu Shongwe’ on Touch HD where he interviews sports personalities and stars.

If that was not enough, Mr Shongwe has worked behind the scenes on various projects that have and will be showcased on mainstream television channels.

“I absolutely love radio though, engaging with people who have similar passions as me and learning how radio works coming from a television background is quite fascinating.”

A typical day in the life of this disc jockey is busy, packed with production meetings and hosting his daytime show.

Despite being in the limelight, Mr Shongwe is a homebody and enjoys playing the occasional basketball game.

His favourite pastime, however, is taking long drives back to his hometown of Breyten to visit family.

“My mother passed away when I was 16-years-old, so I occasionally go back home to see my aunt and cousins.”

Mr Shongwe has yet to reach the peak of his career though and has many things in the pipeline which include a starting a charity organisation named after his mother.

“I want to mentor young boys and girls, using sport as a tool to teach and instill core life skills.”

Mr Shongwe is also working on building his brand and eventually take his radio show to greater heights, the ultimate goal it being on national television.

Local fans and avid radio listeners get to hear him online on Touch HD on ‘The Zone with Sbu Shongwe’.
