The conditions at the Mahala Park Stadium leave much to be desired and a DA councillor voiced her disapproval quite adamantly about a tender to repair it that was allocated a second time.
“A stadium is not a priority for the town at this stage,” Ms Sithi Silosini said.
According to her, a municipal infrastructure grant (MIG) was awarded in the 2012/2013 financial year and also in the 2018/2019 financial year for repairs at the same sport field.
The Lekwa Municipality awarded the tenders to Mr Abel Dhlomo, who recently passed away and according to the councillor, 60 per cent of the money was paid up-front.
The grass at the stadium is not cut, there is no fence, no toilets to speak of and no grandstands.
An amount of R1,2-million was allocated, according to Ms Silosini, to the dysfunctional, vandalised stadium.
“The project bears no fruit,” she also said.
The Standerton Advertiser spoke to the communications manager of the municipality, Ms Thobeka Mtshiselwa, on Friday, 24 May about the stadium.
Ms Mtshiselwa undertook on Monday, 27 May to give feedback as soon as possible.
