Lekwa Municipality’s mention in an online publication about an investigation into corruption and fraud can be confirmed.
According to the publication, the Zondo Commission of Enquiry is probing into the financial affairs of some of the Mpumalanga municipalities.
The above-mentioned article also said 12 municipalities in Mpumalanga, of which Lekwa is one of seven in the Gert Sibande district, were requested to account for the period 1 July 2008 to 30 June last year.
The Standerton Advertiser sent a WhatsApp message to the communications manager of the municipality, Ms Thobeka Mtshiselwa, on 11 September to ascertain the truth.
Ms Mtshiselwa replied as follows on 12 September:
“Zondo Commission has requested documents from the Lekwa Municipality that include audited financial statements and internal audit reports.
“The due date for the documents was 28 June and all requested documents have been forwarded to the commission.”
