
SECUNDA – The Govan Mbeki Municipality walked away with the prize money of R50 000 as the third place winner in the Greenest Municipality Awards that was held at Graceland Hotel, Casino and Country Club in Secunda on Wednesday, 20 November.
The ceremony was hosted by the Mpumalanga Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs and 18 local municipalities competed in the competition.
The municipalities have been evaluated considering the factors, including solid waste management, energy efficiency and conservation, water management and landscaping, tree planting and beautification.
The Department of Environmental Affairs introduced and runs the Greenest Municipality Competition.
This competition encourages municipalities to adopt green practices which ensure a seamless transition to Green Economy.
It was previously known as the Cleanest Town Competition, and primarily focuses on the implementation of the National Waste Management Strategy (NWMS) and the Climate Change Response Policy.
This included principles of reducing, re-using and recycling waste materials and the introduction of renewable energy initiatives.
