Municipality talks about problems at Evander Dam

People are not allowed to disturb others while visiting open park

EVANDER – After residents of Evander complained about people occupying the open space and park area referred to as Evander Dam over weekends, the municipality commented on this issue.

Mr Lucky Mhlongo, spokesman of Govan Mbeki Municipality, said the municipality has noted that some of the parks are being highly used over the festive season.

He said many are plagued by illegal braais, people becoming a nuisance when consuming alcohol, loud music and littering.

He said the dams and parks will be operational over the festive season, but residents need to abide by the by-laws.

Some of these by-laws include:

· No person may, within a public space, act in a manner which is dangerous to life or property.
· Contravene the provisions of any notice within public space.
· Cause a nuisance or behave in an indecent or offensive manner.
· Fire any firearm or pellet gun, discharge fireworks, catapult or sling, throw stones, sticks or other objects, use any squirt, syringe of other instruments, or do anything which may endanger or be deemed a nuisance or annoy the public.
· Make a nuisance of himself by consumption of alcohol or other intoxicating substances to any other persons or users of the park.
· Deposit or leave any refuse, rubbish, papers or any other things in the park other than the place provided for such matter.
· Wash clothes or other things in any pound, fountain or ornamental water feature, stream, river or otherwise pollute any water therein.
· Bath in any pond, fountain, lake, stream, river or ornamental water feature.
· Park their cars near the houses of the community in the area.

Mr Mhlongo said people who will be visiting dams and parks are urged to strictly adhere to these by-laws so as to promote peace and harmony during the holidays and other times.

He urged the community to contact the police and report bad behaviour which might transpire during visitors’ time at the parks and near the dams.
