Secunda landfill site is open again

The Ridge Times asked Messrs Benzi Soko, Chief of Staff at Govan Mbeki Municipality as well as Messrs Donald Green and Lucky Mholong in the municipality’s communications department for comment and although all three read the messages, non of them replied or commented on this issue.

The landfill site in Secunda was closed for one day, on Wednesday, 25 March because the contractor was waiting for Govan Mbeki Municipality to pay before opening the site again today (26 March).

During the one day that the landfill site was closed, many people dumped their rubbish next to the road.

Ms Mariaan Chamberlain, DA Councillor, said that makes the problems 10 times worse.

“I do understand resident’s frustration, but when the rubbish is dumped in the veld next to the roads, an environmental disaster begins and it is a health risk,” said Ms Chamberlain.

She said the payment that the municipality made was for December and not for this year.
