UPDATE 12.20pm: Website confirms earthquake in Govan Mbeki municipal area

According to the website www.geoscience.org.za, the shocks that residents of Secunda, Evander and eMbalenhle felt at 2.29am this morning, was indeed an earthquake that reached 2.8 on the Richter scale.

The information published on the Council for Geoscience Website is obtained from waveforms recorded by the South African National Seismograph Network.

26 April, 11.30am – People feel shock early this morning

People from Secunda, Evander and eMbalenhle said they felt two shocks early this morning at 2.20am and again at 2.30am.

A woman said on social media it sounded like two blasts or explosions, while others said they felt the earth shaking or moving.

People speculated on social media about what it could be.

Some said an earthquake while others said maybe the mines were blasting.

Others said it was bumps that occur after the mines blasted in the area for so many years.
