The electrical team will now try to switch the area in Bethal that is currently without electricity, on to another transformer, however if they do not succeed, some areas in Bethal will be without electricity for the night.

A transformer at the main sub station in Bethal burnt earlier this evening due to overloading.

According to Ms Mariaan Chamberlain, DA councillor, an electrical team was working on the sub station and in the process of switching it on, when it burnt.

“Nobody is injured, but if the worker was closer, it would have ended catastrophically,” said Ms Chamberlain.

Ms Chamberlain said in a message earlier tonight that she sent out on social media, that Bethal’s main sub station is a ticking time bomb.

She urged residents to switch off geysers and pumps when there is load shedding because overloading the system caused the transformer to burn tonight. Photos: Supplied
