Many receive soup and bread on annual Mandela Day
“We want to thank every person, business and entity that gave towards Mandela Day 2020, we sowed some hope, love and encouragement on Saturday”
SECUNDA – This year the Ridge Times, His Way Family Church and the Oregon Spur again teamed up to make a difference in the community on Mandela Day, 18 July.
Thanks to all the amazing sponsors we were able to supply five places with desperately needed food. The team dropped off soup, bread and tinned food at each location.
Albany Bakery donated 200 loaves of bread, Vegiking in Trichardt donated 15kg each of peeled and diced carrots and potatoes, an anonymous donor sponsored other vegetables, Oregon Spur sponsored the meat and other ingredients for the soup, and the community brought in more than 300 cans of food, biscuits and more loaves of bread.
Mr Umar Daya from A&E Hyperworld donated the soup containers.

Oregon Spur prepared 200litres of hearty beef and vegetable soup in a huge pot. This was dished out in the various containers on Saturday morning and ready to be delivered with more than 480 leaves of bread and the food tins.
The first stop was at Buthlebethu Foundation in Afghanistan, Kinross where they specifically reach out to the children in this impoverished community.
The Kinross Lapa that was turned into a shelter for the homeless during the Covid-19 lockdown was the second stop.
Tekoa, a children’s home near the water reservoirs between Kinross and Trichardt was our third stop. Ms Julie de la Guerre and the children thanked the team with a beautiful gospel song.

Ms De la Guerre sent a message afterwards to again thank the team for the large donation. “We view this as a gift out of the Father’s hand,” she said.
The kids at Janelle Huis in Evander were eager to help the team carry in the donations. We were welcomed by a number of curious little ones just craving hugs and attention.
House of Mercy, a hospice run by Ms Shirley Coetzer and Ms Ilse Cooper was our last stop.

They were very thankful for the donation. Ms Cooper said the old people and the patients in their care will especially enjoy the soup.
Past Randal Donnelly from His Way Family Church said: “We want to thank every person, business and entity that gave towards Mandela Day 2020, we sowed some hope, love and encouragement on Saturday.
“Even in times like these we see generosity and that only means that we have hope that the best is yet to come.”
Past Donnelly quoted Acts 20:35. “We are reminded in scripture: ‘In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’.”
Ridge Times, Oregon Spur and His Way Family Church thank everyone who contributed to this cause and hope to again ask for your open hearts and hands next year.
