SPCA in industrial area closing down?

The e-mail enquired as to how the community can handle animal cruelty and asked for comment on the situation in Standerton.

The Standerton Advertiser received a tip-off on Friday, 17 July that the SPCA in the industrial area is closing down and animals are transported to Springs.

Ms Riana Labuschagne said the same day that the Standerton-branch falls under the NSPCA.

She confirmed that the animals are taken away every fortnight.

The situation was brought to the forefront when a dog was found dead at the intersection of Paarl and Handel Streets at about 11.10am on 17 July.

According to a trustworthy source, Lekwa Clean Up Crew was at the scene.

The newspaper contacted Ms Maggie Budd at the liaison unit of the NSPCA, last Friday and an e-mail was sent for perusal.

The e-mail enquired as to how the community can handle animal cruelty and asked for comment on the situation in Standerton.

The reply was as follows: “The NSPCA is currently running the Standerton SPCA after the Highveld Ridge SPCA in Secunda, could no longer afford to continue to be amalgamated with the society.

“With little money, no committee, no vehicle, no SPCA inspector and only one paid staff member the depot now accepts stray or unwanted animals, but no longer homes animals.

“The depot will be deregistered as an SPCA and closed its doors due to a historical lack of support from the local community.

“This is a tremendous misfortune but without backing from the community, it is simply not possible for any SPCA to survive,” said Ms Maggie Budd, National Senior Inspector of the NSPCA.
