DA queries cancellation of provincial legislature meetings about Covid-19

According to Ms Sithole, the MEC Ms Sasekani Manzini, and the premier only updated members of the legislature once, on 4 June, about the situation in Mpumalanga since the beginning of the lockdown period.

Ms Jane Sitholi, DA-spokesman on health in Mpumalanga, issued a press release on 24 July, expressing concern about the provincial government’s releasing of Covid-19 information.

The DA called on the Premier, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, to address members of the legislature on what is going on in the province.

According to Ms Sithole, the MEC Ms Sasekani Manzini, and the Premier only updated members of the legislature once, on 4 June, about the situation in Mpumalanga since the beginning of the lockdown period.

The statement furthermore pointed out that several Covid-19 meetings were cancelled via text messages. “To this day, not a single meeting is scheduled to take the legislature into confidence and bring them up to date regarding what’s going on,” Ms Sithole said.

According to her, no explanation is given.

The DA also questioned the absence of other political parties on the provincial command council, saying they have become a law unto themselves and are evading responsibility.
