Mayor concerned over rising Covid-19 cases in Govan Mbeki municipal area
Ms Ngxonono mourns the death of Ms Phindile Mmola and Mr Joshua Nkosi.

HIGHVELD – About 24 officials from the Govan Mbeki Municipality have been infected with the coronavirus.
This is according to Ms Thandi Ngxonono, executive mayor of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, who has raised her concerns over the rising numbers of Covid-19 infections in the area and within the municipality.
Ms Ngxonono said the effect of Covid-19 is now hitting home with the number of positive cases in GMM increasing alarmingly and exponentially.
She said this is worrying and concerning.
“The numbers have exponentially increased, thereby causing serious challenges and putting a huge strain on the health systems of all municipalities.
“Indeed, we are under siege and indeed, the storm is here.”
Ms Ngxonono said the Covid-19 pandemic continues to unleash chaos and death to the nation with devastating effects “never seen before in the recent history of human kind”.
She said they have been “burying people in an unprecedented manner” because “people are dying left, right and centre”.
She said this pandemic is killing everyone across the board from the so-called ordinary to the so-called extraordinary.
“We have buried the larger-than-life ambassador Ms Zindzi Mandela and the ever helpful Member of Parliament, Ms Phindile Mmola. We are continuing to bury our loved ones due to the merciless Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. We have just lost the speaker of the Gert Sibande District Municipality, Mr Joshua Nkosi who also succumbed to the Covid-19 pandemic.”
“We are all emotionally shattered by the sad news of the passing of Ms Mmola, Mr Nkosi and all other people who succumbed to the pandemic.”
