UPDATE – 4 August 5.45pm – Magistrate in Standerton grants interim interdict against municipality and striking employees

The media liaison of the Lekwa Ratepayers Association issued a statement a few minutes ago on their role in the current situation.

The association said they applied for an urgent interim interdict against the Lekwa Municipality and the striking employees this afternoon, which was subsequently granted.

Power was restored in town. The date for the next court hearing is scheduled for 18 September.

Their high court case against Eskom to prohibit them from applying the notified, maximum demand for electricity is scheduled for 18 August.


4 August 3.45pm – SAMWU-workers protest in front of municipal building

Dissatisfied workers of the Lekwa Municipality left a trail of ashes and papers in Mbonani Mayisela Street this afternoon.

Placards against the fence illustrated their views on management.

The Standerton Advertiser has a copy of their memorandum with demands.

One worker said the Lekwa council is in a meeting at the moment.
