Foreign objects block sewers in eMbalenhle

Among the items that are often found in a blocked sewer pip, are clothes, newspapers, sanitary towels, disposable nappies and general household waste.

eMBALENHLE – The Govan Mbeki Municipality urged residents to prevent sewage spills by not throwing foreign objects into sewers.

The municipality reported that a large number of sewer blockage complaints are caused by foreign objects lodged into the sewerage system.

Among the items that are often found in a blocked sewer pipe are clothes, newspapers, sanitary towels, disposable nappies and general household waste.

The municipality called on communities to adopt healthy and hygienic ways of disposing waste.

Improper disposal of waste creates environmental hazards. The municipality said it will continue to respond to service requests related to sewer blockages.

However, residents need to keep in mind that sewer blockages will continue to occur as long as they misuse the sewerage system.

“We appeal to residents to report a spill of sewage or water to the municipal call centre at 0800 6000 01/2/4 or to send a WhatsApp message to 083 790 0659 for a speedy response and attending the problem,” the municipality stated.
