Speaker of Gert Sibande District Municipality dies due to a Covid-19 related illness

He was also quite vocal about his pride in the institution that received two clean audit opinions for two consecutive years.

Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) issued a statement last week after the speaker of council, Mr Joshua Nkosi, passed away on Saturday, 25 July due to a Covid-19 related illness.

In their tribute, Mr Nkosi was described as passionate about his work and cited as quite vocal about his pride in the institution, that received two clean audits for two consecutive years.

Messages of support and condolences were sent to the Nkosi-family.

“The entire GSDM leadership and personnel pray for strength for the family during this time of bereavement,” the statement said.

“May his soul rest in peace.”

According to a profile received from the municipality, Mr Joshua Mangaliso Nkosi became the speaker in 2016 and served as a councillor in Mkhondo Municipality before the local government term began in 2011.

He also served as a member of the mayoral committee in the term that began in 2011.

The profile went on to say that he brought vast experience to local government and through unconditional love for his work, served the people by also caring about the welfare of councillors.

“His last act of kindness to ward committees was to ensure that each ward committee member, across the district, is kept safe from the pandemic by giving them face masks,” the profile read.

Other initiatives were the provision of uniforms and stationery to ward committee members at the beginning of their terms.

The profile concluded with a call to all the structures that he worked with, the people that knew him, those that worked with him, those that benefited from his work and his family to ensure that his name lives forever through his values.
