Govan Mbeki municipal manager under fire for late submission of Annual Financial Statements

Ms Thandi Ngxonono changes her tone toward the Municipal Manager

HIGHVELD – The Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) has again missed the deadline for the submission of the Annual Financial Statements (AFS) to the National Treasury and Auditor General.

Ms Thandi Ngxonono, executive mayor, expressed her dissatisfaction regarding this during a virtual council meeting recently.

She has called on Mr Felani Mndebele, municipal manager, and his administration to ensure that the issue of the AFS is attended to once and for all.

“We are concerned that the municipality is still awaiting the audit outcome which is outstanding due to the late submission.

“We appeal for the expeditious resolution of this outstanding audit process.”

Ms Ngxonono further called on Mr Mndebele to intensify service delivery in the area.

She wants consistent collection of refuse removal in the communities.

Mr Simon Felani Mndebele from Bethal was appointed as the municipal manager for the Govan Mbeki Municipality in 2018.

She said failure to collect refuse, is unacceptable and must be avoided at all times.

Speaking about the electricity crisis, Ms Ngxonono admitted that it is still a problem for the municipality.

“It is now an open secret that the issue of electricity has become our main concern among many concerns of service delivery.

“We have been frank and honest about this issue and in the process, we have been meeting with all stakeholders with a view to find possible and workable solutions.

“Just last week on 20 August, we had a progressive engagement with the business community in Bethal. We deliberated for three hours in an endeavour to find solutions to these challenges.

“The rotational load shedding that we are currently implementing, is the viable solution at our disposal under the circumstances.”

She said officials in the energy department have since drafted the schedule for the rotational load shedding and the communications department has published it.

The Democratic Alliance has expressed its disappointment that Ms Thandi Ngxonono could not give a date when the municipality will finally submit the outstanding 2018/19 AFS to the National Treasury and the Auditor General.
