The DA called for the appointment of administrators in five financially non-viable Mpumalanga municipalities, Lekwa being one of them.
Ms Trudie Grovè-Morgan, DA spokesman on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), issued a press release on 2 September, saying they have been failing to meet their financial responsibilities and mandates for five years.
The statement went on to say that the MEC of CoGTA at the time, Mr Speedy Mashilo, and the Premier, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, both intervened in August 2018 with a Financial Recovery Plan in the Lekwa Municipality.
These plans which were drafted, dealt with both aspects of revenue streams, namely revenue generation strategies and creditor repayment.
“It is clear that action is needed and that by waiting, we are only worsening the financial crisis,” Ms Grové-Morgan concluded.
