HIGHVELD – The Economic Freedom Fighters has filed a motion of no confidence against the executive mayor of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, Ms Thandi Ngxonono.
The party claims that since Ms Ngxonono took over, service delivery has deteriorate in the area. The EFF said Ms Ngxonono is incompetent and lacks vision to better the lives of locals.
Mr Thabiso Mofokeng, EFF caucus leader, said service delivery continues to be poor in the area and driven by non-accountability and lack consequence management.
“When this mayor took over in 2018 there was a strike where municipal property was destroyed by fire and until today no-one has been charged. We have also learned that she has been interfering with the day-to-day running of the municipality which made it difficult for Mr Felani Mndebele, municipal manager, to execute her duties.
“For almost a whole month the municipality could not sell electricity and there is no one accounted for that.”
Mr Mofokeng said the municipality did not pay Rand Water and that it is a clear indication that there is a lack of revenue collection and this might result to water reductions in the area. He said Gert Sibande District Municipality has intervened in the electricity crisis because the GMM has failed.
The EFF is concerned that residents continue to experience power outages and they fear that the situation might turn violent like in 2018.
Mr Nhlakaniphi Zuma, speaker, confirmed that he received the EFF’s motion.
