HIGHVELD – Ms Fikile Nyembe was elected as new Govan Mbeki Municipality speaker of the council.
This came after Mr.Nhlakanipho Zuma (former speaker) was elected as Govan Mbeki Municipality’s new executive mayor.
Ms Nyembe serve as the MMC for Corporate Services at the Gert Sibande District Municipality before coming to Govan Mbeki Municipality.
When delivering her welcome address, she thanked councillors for believing in her and not forgetting the community in her home town, Leandra.
She promised to conduct public participation programs in all communities of the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
Ms Nyembe also pleaded with the community not to burn property or municipal infrastructure during demonstrations.
The new speaker emphasised that her office is always open for engagement and ensured the community that she will attend to their daily challenges as required by the law.
The council also deliberated on the section 106 report whereby some of the companies implicated in it have taken legal steps against the municipality.
