Mr Nhlakanipho Zuma was elected as the executive mayor after holding position as the speaker since the local government elections. The opposition parties never approved his nomination.

HIGHVELD – The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) confiscated laptops from the supply chain department at Govan Mbeki Municipality for investigation.

This was confirmed by Mr. Hlakanipho Zuma, the executive mayor the municipality.

The community is still waiting for action to be taken against politicians, employees and private companies implicated in the section 106 investigation audit report.

Many things happened within this institution this year.

Mr Felani Mndebele, municipal manager, was suspended.

He responded to a letter that notified him about the council’s decision to suspend him because he failed to submit annual financial statements to the Auditor General, by implicating politicians who were interfering with his work.

Ms Thandi Ngxonono resigned as Govan Mbeki Municipality’s executive mayor after the section 106 report came out and the Chief Financial Officer was also suspended.

Sapromo welcomed the SIU investigation into the municipality. “We were waiting for this a long time ago, we believe all those implicated will be arrested. We failed to implement section 106 recommendations as Govan Mbeki municipal council” said Mr Sibusiso Hlolweni, president of Sapromo.

Mr Thabiso Mofokeng, chief whip for the EFF, said they appreciate and welcome the arrival of the SIU.

“The EFF will cooperate with them but our worry is their scope of work,” said Mr Mofokeng.

The DA also welcomed the SIU.

“It is unfortunate that only time will tell whether this will bring change in the lives of the residents that are supposed to be served by the municipality,” said Ms Ciska Jordaan, caucus leader of the DA.

“Rand Water throttles the water supply to our municipality, and the more than R2 billion Eskom-debt is like an axe above the head of the institution.”
