Electricity boxes in Secunda and Trichardt are open

Anybody can access and tamper with electrical cables.

SECUNDA – Residents are concerned about the open electricity boxes in Secunda and Trichardt.

Some of these boxes have been open for years and thus give access to anybody to fiddle with it.

The Ridge Times did many stories before about this issue.

Mr Donald Green, head of communications at Govan Mbeki Municipality, said there are many electricity boxes in the Govan Mbeki municipal area and the municipality does attend to these boxes as and when they are found to be open.

“We do have an ongoing programme to identify and repair electricity boxes,” said Mr Green.

“Tampering is mainly due to the theft of fuses or illegal connections, however, theft and vandalism is a challenge.”

Mr Green said the municipality urged the community to put a stop to this scourge.

“Vandalism and damaging of equipment are costing the municipality lots of money that could have been used to ensure service delivery is adhered to.

“This also causes inconvenience to the community.”

He asked the community to take ownership of the infrastructure by reporting any suspicious behaviour by calling 017 620 6327 or by sending an e-mail to compliance@govanmbeki.gov.za or by calling the police directly.
