EVANDER – Phindile Shabangu will remain behind bars for the next five years.
This former teller at a local bank was found guilty of stealing more than R600 000 at the bank and sentenced in the Evander Regional Court to 10 years’ imprisonment on 20 January.
The money was stolen between 12 December 2018 and 18 June 2019.
According to testimony, Shabangu took in deposits from businesses, but later reversed the payments and then pocketed the cash. Alarms were raised when clients noticed the money was not reflecting in their accounts.
The bank opened a case against Shabangu and she was subsequently arrested on 20 June 2019 at the home affairs offices in Komatipoort with her baby and fiancé. It is believed that Shabangu was trying to flee the country.
The bank had questioned Shabangu regarding R400 00 that went missing the previous day. She failed to turn up for work the next day.
The stolen money was never recovered.
