Lekwa in Standerton has rocky boat slowly steadied

“These appointments are guided by the provisions of section 154(1) and 155(6) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 read together with section 105(1) of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, 2000 (Act No. 32 of 2000),” the statement read.

Lekwa Municipality appointed an acting municipal manager and acting executive manager of corporate services.

Mpumalanga Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) assigned two senior officials in acting capacity.

Mr Jonny Mosweu Mokgatsi and Dr Louis Scheepers were appointed with effect from June 18 until December 18.

Mr Johann Mettler, administrator, issued a statement the past week in which the legalities of the appointments are cited.

“These appointments are guided by the provisions of section 154(1) and 155(6) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 read together with section 105(1) of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, 2000 (Act No. 32 of 2000),” the statement read.

The assignment is for a period of six months or when the recruitment processes for the municipal manager and the executive manager corporate services have been finalised, whichever comes first.

A brief background on the officials was given.

Mr Mokgatsi is not new to local government and has previously worked as a chief financial officer and as municipal manager in a number of municipalities within and outside Mpumalanga.

Dr Scheepers is an experienced public sector management and development practitioner with 27 years of experience in provincial, metropolitan, district and local municipalities.

He also previously served as municipal manager and administrator in five different municipalities.

Mr Mettler welcomed these appointments and commented that it will help a great deal in turning the municipality around.
