Store owner catches armed robber in Lothair

Mathias was arrested; the other two managed to flee with the stolen items.

LOTHAIR – Andy Mathias (29) was sentenced by the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court for robbery.

Const Bathobile Khumalo, the spokesman for the Lothair police, said Mathias and two unknown accomplices had robbed the owners of the Silindile Supermarket at gunpoint.

The trio stole money, airtime, and a cell phone all to the value of R32 400, and fled the scene on foot.

The owner of the supermarket chased after them and saw Mathias was falling behind the other two.

With the help of another member of the public, they caught Mathias and called the police for assistance.
Mathias was arrested; the other two managed to flee with the stolen items.

He was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment and was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
