The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieut-Gen Semakaleng Manamela, welcomed the arrest of three suspects in connection with an attempted scam.
According to a media release of September 1, the men, aged between 28 and 32, were due to appear before the Amersfoort Magistrate’s Court on September 1.
It follows their arrest in Amersfoort on Monday, August 30.
According to the statement. reports from police in Amersfoort revealed that a woman was in town, when the three men reportedly approached her.
One of the suspects grabbed her handbag, exchanged her purse with an envelope and took out an undisclosed amount of cash.
The woman reportedly began screaming for help and the suspects fled the scene, leaving behind the money that was reportedly taken from her.
Amersfoort Clinic personnel reportedly came to her aid and notified police.
Police acted swiftly and gave chase.
Rural Safety Officials also came on board and joined hands with police.
The identified vehicle, with the suspects inside, was stopped it and the men apprehended.
Lieut-Gen Manamela applauded the joint effort displayed by stakeholders, as well as their immediate response to the information and successful arrest of the suspects.
