Body of teenage boy retrieved from quarry

A search-and-rescue operation began the same day, but due to bad light it could only resume the following day.

ERMELO – A 16-year-old boy drowned in a quarry next to the Bethal Road on September 12.

A search-and-rescue operation began the same day, but due to bad light it could only resume the following day.

The Delta 1 Rescue Diving team and members of the Mpumalanga Inland Water Police and Lydenburg K9 Search and Rescue team returned on September 13.

Shortly before 11:00 they recovered the boy’s body.

Capt Carla Prinsloo, the spokesman for the Ermelo police, said members of the police had been dispatched to the scene and upon arrival met with two young boys, who had been with the victim at the time of the incident.

“They told the police they had been swimming when their friend disappeared under the water,” she said.

According to Mr Andries Lee of Delta 1 Recue Diving, two divers were needed to retrieve the body which had been discovered at a depth of about four to five metres.

The Ermelo police, Spartan Training and Security, ER24, Mpumalanga Inland Water Police, Lydenburg K9 Search and Rescue and Delta 1 Rescue Diving were on the scene.
