Breyten parents appear in court after leaving toddler and young child alone at home

A case was opened and a local social worker took the children to a place of safety

BREYTEN – Breyten police arrested a 34-year-old man and his girlfriend (23) in connection with alleged child neglect on September 22.

According to Sgt Thabo Mashegoane, the spokesman for Breyten police, they received a complaint of three children, aged between three and 10, who were left alone at their house.

“Neighbours of the family took the children in for the night and looked after them, as their parents only showed up the following day,” Sgt Mashegoane said.

The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) office was notified of the incident.

“The parents were traced and arrested for neglecting their children.”

They appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court and the case was postponed.

The couple will appear in the Breyten Magistrate’s Court on October 1.

Sgt Mashegoane urged parents to look after their children and take into consideration that children need protection at all times.
