UPDATE: Secunda Hawks nab three suspected drug dealers in one week

Drugs that were found and seized included rock cocaine, nyaope and crystal meth.

Themba Hemilton Modise (52), who was arrested for dealing in drugs and corruption at the Secunda taxi rank on Thursday, January 13, is still in police custody. He appeared in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Monday, January 17, and the case the was postponed to January 21 for appointment of attorney.

He remains remains in custody.

Ms Nthombenle Ellen Hlopei (60) appeared before the Evander District Court also on Monday, January 17, for dealing in drugs around Leandra.

She was granted R2 000 bail. The case was postponed to 22 February for a forensic report and further investigation.

Secunda Hawks nab three suspected drug dealers in one week


The Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation based in Secunda, arrested three people in the area within a week for drug possession and drug trafficking in the Secunda area.

The Hawks , together with Crime Intelligence and the K9 unit responded to information about a suspect allegedly dealing in drugs around Leandra on Friday, January 14.

Capt Dineo Sekgothodi, Hawks provincial spokesperson, said a disruptive search and seizure operation was executed on the premises and drugs ( nyaope) were found hidden under the bed of the suspect who was present during the search.

A 60-year-old suspect was arrested and detained.

The drugs were confiscated for further investigation. The suspect will appear before the Evander District Court on Monday, January 17.

The Hawks also arrested a drug dealer on Thursday, January 13, at the Secunda taxi rank.

A Hawks member received information from a reliable source about a drug dealer who was packaging drugs inside his vehicle, a silver Volkswagen Polo, at the taxi rank in Secunda.

The member immediately requested the assistance of Secunda Vispol to urgently attend to the information.

According to Capt Sekgotodi, the Secunda Vispol members found the suspect found in the process of packaging the drugs for distribution purposes.

The following drugs were found and seized: rock cocaine in clear plastic packets, nyaope wrapped in brown plastics and crystal meth in clear plastic packets.

The suspect was placed under arrest but then took out R680 from his pocket and tried to bribe the two police members to release him.

The cops refused and added the charge of corruption. The suspect was taken to the police station where the members of Serious Organised Crime processed and detained him.

The exhibits inclusive of the vehicle were booked in Secunda for further investigation.

The suspect, Mr Themba Hemilton Modise (52) appeared before the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Monday, January 17.  

He was remanded in custody and will again appear on January 21.

In a third drug bust, 53-year-old Belinda Swart was arrested in Secunda on Tuesday, January 11.

The Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation based in Secunda, together with Crime Intelligence and K9 Unit promptly responded to information about a suspect allegedly dealing in drugs around Secunda.

A disruptive search and seizure operation was executed on the premises and the suspect was found in possession of drugs (crystal meth).

Swart appeared in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, January 13.

During the first appearance on Thursday, the defence of the accused insisted to proceed with a formal bail application on a schedule 5 hearing. The accused was denied bail and remanded in custody.

The case was postponed to April 4 for further investigation.

Swart was previously arrested by the Hawks in 2018 for drugs and drugs trafficking.

She was found guilty in August 2018 and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment of which 18 months were suspended for 5 years, with the choice of acknowledgement of guilt to the amount of R12 000.
