Bethal Court sends convicted murder to additional 18 years in jail

Smith was arrested  in 2016, following a search and seizure operation at his house in Bethal where five unlicensed firearms, ammunition, police uniforms and uncut diamonds were seized.

Leeroy Raymond Smith (33) who is already serving a life term imprisonment has additionally been sentenced to eighteen years by the Bethal Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, January 26, following a plea agreement.

Smith was arrested  in 2016, following a search and seizure operation at his house in Bethal where five unlicensed firearms, ammunition, police uniforms and uncut diamonds were seized.

At the time of arrest, Smith was out on bail for a murder case committed in Newlands East during March 2015.

The court has, however, ordered that the six years of the eighteen be suspended for five years.

The latest sentence is in addition to the life sentence given to Smith on a murder case.
