Hawks deal with alleged corruption near Standerton

An investigator reportedly received a phone call regarding an unknown Nigerian man, who wanted to meet him to negotiate the release of his brother.

A team of the Hawks’ Serious Crime Investigation in Secunda arrested Uche Uchena (43) and Arinze Ezeokwusa (41) in connection with corruption, in Volksrust the past week.

According to a recent statement, the suspects appeared in the Volksrust Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, March 8.

They were remanded in custody.

Members of the Hawks attended court on Monday, March 7 where a bail application was held for a suspect, charged with dealing in drugs.

An investigator reportedly received a phone call regarding an unknown Nigerian man, who wanted to meet him to negotiate the release of his brother.

The brother was appearing in court after his arrest on December 9 last year and has been in custody since.

A sting operation was put in place after the court granted authorisation.

The suspects approached the investigator, as planned, and offered an amount of R5 000 to ensure the brother`s release.

The pair offered to pay an additional amount to have the case scrapped from the roll.

They were consequently arrested and charged with corruption.

The case was postponed to March 11 for a formal bail application.
