Head-on collision near Standerton claims five lives
The deceased include two male drivers, two female passengers and one child.
Five people died in an accident on the R23 Road, near Val, the evening of Sunday, April 10.
According to a media statement of the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, it was a head-on collision between a Volkswagen Golf and Nissan sedan.
Both vehicles caught fire upon impact.
The deceased include two male drivers, two female passengers and one child.
One person was seriously injured, while two people escaped with slight injuries.
The injured were rushed to the nearby hospital in Standerton.
The cause of the collision is not known, however, contravention of road rules might have caused it.
An investigation is underway.
The MEC of the department, Vusi Shongwe, once more pleaded with motorists to obey the rules.
He also encouraged them to reduce speeding amid the wet weather.
“Let us be discerning and make our safety, and that of other road users, a high priority,” Shongwe concluded.
“We must all play our part to end carnage on our roads by obeying the rules and adjusting our driving, according to prevailing road conditions.”
The Standerton Advertiser was unable to get hold of Val Police on Monday, April 11 to find out whether the families of the deceased have been contacted.
A telephone message to the department was also left the same day.
