Calls from a resident lead to the arrest of a cable thief in Evander

Locals also say that there is no assistance from local police when residents report such cases.

A cable thief was arrested by MavCorp and Secunda, Kinross, eMbalenhle and Evander police on Thursday, April 21, between 22:00 and 23:00.

A call came through from a concerned resident of cable thieves digging up cables in a field at the back of Toulouse Street.

Fears were that the cable thieves could be armed.

Locals also say that there is no assistance from local police when residents report such cases.

Communication between MavCorp High-Risk Response and the station commander of Evander Police led to all teams going out to the scene and successfully apprehending one criminal.

The Ridge Times reported on February 9, of the cable theft happening in this stretch of field.

For more than 1km are telltale signs of holes that have been dug by the cable thieves.

The brazen thieves do not only target this area at night but in broad daylight as well.
