Youth in Standerton wants job opportunities at Tutuka

A group of young people congregated in Beyers Naudé Street at an open stand on Wednesday, April 13 to voice their concerns about job opportunities.

The Lekwa Employment Association handed over a memorandum to the management of Tutuka Power Station, requesting that locals are prioritised for employment.

It is alleged that the business forum fails to engage with the community.

The association demanded that the database at the Eskom hub be cleared to have 70% of local residents prioritised for employment.

According to the association, skilled people with qualifications can fill the vacancies.

They also demanded their own database administrators.

With regard to the stakeholders forum, an allegation was made that representatives have been occupying their seats for more than two years, failing to contribute to the community.

Furthermore, no feedback allegedly is given on issues of development.

The association also demanded skills development, bursaries, learner ships and internships to uplift the youth of Lekwa.

The age of representatives at the stakeholders forum was also brought up.

They claim the youth can’t be represented by people who are 50 years and older.

A container dealing with employment verification at Tutuka was requested as well.

The number of representatives at the stakeholders forum was also questioned.

A period of seven working days was given for feedback.

The Standerton Advertiser contacted Mduduzi Dlamini from the association on Wednesday, April 20 to enquire whether they have heard anything from the management of Tutuka.

The answer was in the negative and the time-frame for feedback, however, would have been April 26.

The newspaper sent an email to the general manager at Tutuka Power Station, Sello Mametja, on Friday, April 23. enquiring whether the memorandum has been received.

Comment on the allegations made was also requested.
