Mediclinic Highveld recognises nurses for hard work
Minette Smit receives Nurses Excellence Award.
Mediclinic Highveld celebrated international Nurses’ Day on Thursday, May 12 and recognised their nurses for their contribution to the community.
Minette Smit was chosen as the winner of the special award and received the Nursing Excellence Award as a symbol of appreciation and recognition for the care she delivers to her patients and for supporting her colleagues during an exceptionally challenging time in healthcare.
According to her colleagues, a professional nurse, Smit, is a good nurse who shows empathy to each patient, making an effort to put herself in the patient’s shoes.
Patient services manager, Sphiwe Mahlalela, said Smit uses her knowledge, skills and critical judgment to provide the highest quality patient care.
“She is a team player who supports her team fully and does whatever is necessary to ensure that the required tasks get carried out,” said Mahlalela.
“She deserves the Nursing Excellence Award because of her kindness, fairness, caring attitude, trustworthiness, empathy and compassion for her work, her team and most importantly the clients, our patients.
“She is an amazing person with lots of energy and she always has a positive attitude towards every staff member and patient.”
The theme for this year’s Nurses’ Day was ‘Care is a Calling’ and the management team of Mediclinic Highveld is grateful to take this opportunity to shine the light on the invaluable nursing teams.
They acknowledged that the last two years have been challenging for all healthcare workers worldwide.
Mahlalela said: “We recognise each nurse who has chosen a career of caring for others.
“It is not a task that can be ticked off on a ‘to do’ list, nor can it be measured, like blood pressure.
“Caring cannot be studied in a textbook nor captured on a CV.
“But it can be seen and felt by those who receive this care, and it is impossible to miss.
“We recognise these unmistakeable carers within our hospitals and we recognise that their care for others is the reason why our patients visit our hospitals and trust our expertise.”
Nurses had to complete several tasks as a fun event on the day of the awards and all of them received gift packs and lunch.
Social workers of Famsa addressed nurses and reminded them that self-care is also important.
