Grootdraai Dam slowly rises again
Mpumalanga recorded an improvement in water levels after consecutive weeks of decline.
Grootdraai Dam is on the rise again.
According to a media statement on June 1 from the Department of Water and Sanitation, the dam in the Integrated Vaal River System in the Gert Sibande District in Mpumalanga, recorded an improvement after consecutive weeks of decline.
The department’s weekly state of reservoirs report of May 30 shows a slight 0.1% increase from 101.5% to 101.6%.
Nooitgdeacht and Morgenstond are the other listed dams that recorded improvements in the district.
Nooitgedacht increased from 97.4% to 100.8% and Morgenstond increased from 99.8% to 100.0%.
On the decline mode in the district, Vygeboom dropped from 102.3% to 101.0%, Jericho from 101.6% to 100.8%, Westoe from 99.3% to 99.1% and Heyshope from 100.9% to 100.7%.
According to the statement, the average water levels in Mpumalanga recorded a slight improvement from 95.4% to 95.5%.
The Water Management Areas (WMA) recorded contrasting views, with the Olifants WMA recording a slight drop from 84.6% to 86.5% and the Inkomati-Usuthu WMA remaining unchanged at 99.4%.
The department called on the public to intensify water conservation efforts and use the available water wisely and sparingly, especially as we are now in the dry winter season in most parts of the country.
They also reminded the public that South Africa is a water scarce country and water security for the current and future generations depends on the responsible use of the available water and the protection of water resources.
