Sasol collects waste from eMbalenhle community
Engineers launched community development programme in 2013.
Sasol held a swop shop at its eMbalelenhle Recreation Centre on Saturday, June 4.
The swop shop is a community development programme founded by Sasol Secunda Junior Engineers in 2013 as part of the Sasol for Good Programme.
“Sasol for Good is an Employee Volunteering Programme (EVP) which creates an avenue to leverage the considerable, diverse abilities and expertise of our employees by becoming more involved in their communities by volunteering and donating their time, skills, and personal resources in initiatives that drive positive change and impact the quality of life in the communities within we live and work,” said Rethabile Njibu, Sasol social impact manager.
The swop shop event is held once a month at the eMbalenhle Community Centre with the intent of collecting waste material in exchange for vouchers that community members can use to buy household essentials in retail shops.
According to Sasol, the program began at schools where learners were encouraged to collect waste and take it to the recreation club in exchange for school books and other learning necessities.
“Because most of these learners began to involve their parents and family members, we decided to involve everyone in recycling, young and old, and we started to introduce vouchers.
“We realised that some community members depend on waste collection for their survival.
“Anyone interested in this programme has to join first and is for free. We are working with major recyclers who collect waste to their factories where it is sorted and recycled,” said Njibu.
