The eMbalenhle Police arrested two men, aged 27 and 19, for possessing unlicensed firearms on Friday, June 10.
According to Const Busi Mthethwa, eMbalenhle Police spokesperson, the cops received a tip-off from the community that led to the arrest of the two men.
Mthethwa said these men were arrested in different areas.
She said the 19-year-old was arrested at his home at Ext 8, eMbalenhle after an R5 rifle was found inside a bag.
“After receiving the tip-off about a suspect with an R5 rifle, police rushed to the man’s house and requested to search it.
The police dug up the R5 rifle in the young man’s garden and arrested him.
A 27-year-old man was also apprehended for possessing an unlicensed pistol at Thandanani Hostel in Ext 8 after the community informed a police officer of a man carrying a gun in public.
The police found the suspect in possession of the gun and he was arrested.
“Both suspects were charged with the possession of unlicensed firearms and will appear before court soon,” said Mthethwa.
Mthethwa said police intelligence conducted an operation in eMbalenhle on Monday, June 13 because of escalating crime.
According to Mthethwa, more suspects have been arrested during this operation.
