Bethal CPF warns of an increase in the theft of tow-behind units

The greatest concern is that, while observation is being done by CPF patrollers, the amount of properties that are left unsecured, especially at night.

The Bethal Community Policing Forum (CPF) is warning residents of the high increase in the theft of caravans, trailers and jet skis in the area.

According to CPF chairman Jaap Pretorius, the theft and attempted theft of a trailer, caravan and jet ski were reported in a space of two weeks.

This is an alarming increase. Previously, such reports would be about one in six months.

The greatest concern is that, while observation is being done by CPF patrollers, there are a large number of properties that are left unsecured, especially at night.

This leaves an open invitation for any criminal.

“On patrols, the patrollers observed many trailers, caravans and ‘tow behind units’ are being left unsecured.

“Please make sure that these valuable items are properly stored, and lock your gates at night,” said Pretorius.

Homeowners with electric gates are still advised to also lock their gates with a padlock for more security.

Pretorius said the theft mainly happens between midnight and 04:30.

He also said residents or motorists who suspect anything suspicious during these hours of the morning, must report it to the number provided so that it can be investigated.

“It is abnormal for things to be towed during this time. If something doesn’t look right, it usually isn’t,” said Pretorius.

During holiday seasons, some people prefer to leave in the early hours of the morning for their destination, and having to distinguish a thief from the actual owner may be a challenge.

However, Pretorius said they would rather follow up on a lead than see an owner lose their possessions.

Should you suspect any criminal activity between these hours, contact the emergency number on 072 711 3410.
