Blood service in Secunda urgently needs blood
Visit the blood service in Secunda and Bethal.
The local branch of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is in urgent need of blood stock.
Dot Prinsloo, the donor relations practitioner for SANBS in Secunda, said as the winter is in full swing, the blood stock levels continue to decline.
“The SANBS currently has less than three days of stock of blood group O and this is much lower than the five days’ stock needed to sustain the country’s need for blood products,” said Prinsloo.
“The winter is always a difficult season for blood collections because of the cold weather which impacts the availability of our donors and limited access to school blood drives.
“This impacts our ability to collect the minimum of 3 500 units of blood daily that are needed to treat patients.”
The blood group O stock have dropped significantly and Prinsloo urged residents to donate blood.
“While the SANBS struggles with the declining blood stocks, the demand from patients is not slowing down.”
Prinsloo said those in the community who can help with hosting a mobile blood drive, can visit the SANBS’s website and book a blood drive.
