Seven people die in accident near Leandra
MEC urge motorists to observe traffic rules and drive safely.
Seven people died in an accident involving a minibus taxi and an articulated truck on the R50 road between Leandra and Standerton on Sunday night, October 23.
Two people were seriously injured and taken to Evander Hospital and two passengers from the taxi escaped with slight injuries.
According to Moeti Mmusi, spokesman of the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, the road was closed off for hours as emergency personnel and law enforcement officers worked on clearing the scene.
The truck was conveying coal from Standerton to Leandra while the taxi is believed to have been transporting passengers from a church meeting in KwaZulu Natal to Devon.
Mmusi said although the investigation is already underway, reckless and negligent driving cannot be ruled out.
The MEC in Mpumalanga for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe, conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those who were injured a speedy recovery.
He appealed to motorists to observe the traffic rules and do their part to make South African roads safer.
