DA is not happy with Lekwa Municpality’s lack of bylaws
Political party wrote to the Municipal Manager and want answers.
The DA is appalled by the lawlessness in the Lekwa municipal area.
Sithi Silosini, DA Councillor, said this includes livestock grazing in town, disorderly informal traders increasing and illegal dumping everywhere around town.
“The coalition government in this municipality has failed to adopt bylaws and policies that regulate the affairs and services of Lekwa,” said Silosini.
“The municipality has been operating without bylaws for four years and all policies were referred to the bylaws committee for a review in February.
“However, nothing has been reviewed and approved to date. The municipality’s reluctance in this regard is a demonstration of poor governance.”
According to Silosini, this resulted to the municipality being unable to issue business licenses to national retailers in the town of Standerton affecting the growth of this town and chasing away potential investors and entrepreneurs, demarcated spots for informal traders are being occupied by homeless people, several locations turned into illegal dumping spots because there is no law that prohibits it, noise complaints at music concerts being held at Riverpark not dealt with, due to non-existent bylaws and the police cannot do anything and domestic animals and other livestock roaming around town freely and obstructing traffic.
“The municipality has nine by-law enforcement officers who do not have matric and cannot be sent for the necessary training,” said Silosini.
“This serves as another classic example of cadre deployment at the expense of taxpayers.”
The DA wrote a letter to the Municipal Manager, Malose Lamola, to urgently call the bylaw committee to order and make sure that they implement the adopted bylaws in this municipality.
“We condemn the lawlessness in Lekwa, ratepayers deserve better service delivery and a healthy living environment that they can be proud of.”
