The Cullinan Scouts spent their time cleaning up their village on Saturday morning, October 29.
This forms part of the Scouts South Africa national challenge for 2022 called “Scouts Go Solar” which conforms to the United Nations’ sustainable development goals.
One of the requirements for the Scouts is to pick up at least 100kg of glass in and around natural areas.
“Our Scouts came up with the idea to not only pick up the glass but go that extra mile and pick up litter too,” said a Scout group leader, Anwyn Oosthuizen.
She is a Scout and a homeschooler who decided to “gamify” the route and hid clues in trees and on street signs.
There are four advancement levels within the Scouting programme, and this kind of activity is a requirement to advance to the Discoverer level.

Cullinan has Scouts between the ages of seven and 18 learning valuable skills using hands-on activities.
“We currently have a Scout who is busy with her Springbok colours, which is the highest and most prestigious award in scouting,” said another Scout group leader.
Next year, one of the Cullinan Scouts will be joining about 50 000 Scouts from around the world at the 25th World Scout Jamboree in South Korea.
Scouting is one of the biggest youth movements globally, involving both boys and girls from around six to 17 years of age and is leading the way with its commitment towards sustainable development goals (SDGs) by applying their time to volunteer and by following the three principles known as Duty to God, Duty to Others, and Duty to Self.
The Cullinan Scouts are homeschoolers Luke Jakubowski (11), Vianca O’Neill (12), Anwyn Oosthuizen (13) and Nia-Lee O’Neill (17), homeschooler, Hanno van Deventer (12) and Marinda van Deventer (14) who are learners from Uitkoms Akademie, Anika van der Bank (13) from Erasmus Primary School, Lianie O’Neill (Troop Scouter), Sarah Chester-Browne (Scout group leader) and Anja van Deventer (assistant Troop Scouter).
