Angel Khanyile of Standerton wants water shortages to be addressed

Angel Khanyile, MP of the DA, issued a statement on November 2 in which the party’s stance on the water crisis in Lekwa was outlined.

The DA has written to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in Mpumalanga, requesting an investigation into the crisis in various parts of Lekwa.

According to Khanyile, this follows their letter to Malosi Lamola, municipal manager, to provide a plan and timelines to address the issue of water outages caused inter alia by load-shedding.

“We have also appealed to the MM to address the crisis facing Ext 2 residents of Ward 5, who have been denied access to water for more than 10 years,” she said.

“Operative plans should be put in place to curb shortages in other wards, considering that the municipality does not have the capacity to deliver water through water trucks to all affected areas.”

Residents are thus left without access to water for a period exceeding four weeks.

Khanyile also said the MM failed to address the issues raised in his response and chose to put the blame on the residents.

“Lamola’s total disregard for the crisis plaguing Lekwa residents and refusal to take accountability speaks to the source of failing governance in this municipality.”

The statement concluded with saying the DA will not sit idly by while residents are deprived of basic rights, but will closely monitor feedback from the SAHRC and continue to put pressure on the municipality mandated to deliver this basic service.
