eMzinoni cancer twins’ Durban trip cancelled
Twins Lwanele and Lwandile Mkhonza suffer from a rare autosomal recessive disorder called xeroderma pigmentosum.
Lwanele and Lwandile Mkhonza’s trip to Durban on June 18 was cancelled. They didn’t take the news well.
These 16-year-old twins suffer from a rare autosomal recessive disorder called xeroderma pigmentosum (XP).
The Xeroderma Pigmentosum Society informed them on June 13 that their Durban trip had to be cancelled because the dermatologist from London, England, could no longer come to SA.
He did not say when he would reschedule the appointment with the twins. XP leads to aggressive skin cancer and multiple tumours in the area of the head.

The boys suffer from tumours on their tongues. One has lost both eyes and the other one eye due to XP.
With this cancer, they can’t be in the sun for too long – even just two minutes could badly burn their skin. There is no cure for XP.
The twins were excited to go to Durban to see the dermatologist and had hoped he could do something to help them.
Phumzile Mkhonza, their mother, asked the community of Bethal to help them in this struggle.
“People shouldn’t be scared to come and see Lwanele and Lwandile. They can call and talk to me, and I will direct them to where I’m staying.”
She said people are welcome to see their circumstances and why they asked for help.
The Ridge Times wrote in their previous edition that the Mkhonza family needed help with their living conditions, soft food for the twins and education.
The family have received nothing to date.
