Students show their designs at fashion show
“We make good quality clothes, affordable to everyone."
Gert Sibande TVET College recently held a fashion show where most people attending came dressed to the nines and the men and women walked and talked about sartorial elegance.
High school learners also attended the event. The college council chairperson Lawrence Chauke, told the attendees the fashion show was about making Gert Sibande TVET College relevant.
“To our students, this is a platform to showcase the work done by our students who are creatives.”
Chauke added big business needed to support the work done by fashion designers from the TVET college.
“If your workplace requires you to wear a uniform our fashion designers at the college can make it. We plead with companies to start placing orders.”
He said the college supported the students after they finished their course.
“Our college is one of a kind. We get our students to work at various companies and they get a monthly stipend.”
The beautiful and much-anticipated fashion show was at the Waterfront Lodge, where different fashionistas and designers showcased their beautiful work.
The designers had stalls of different fashion wear. Fashion designer Dumisani Nkosi said to the Standerton Advertiser he lives and breathes fashion.
“These are interesting times we are living in. The youth are rising and taking part in being entrepreneurs. This allows us as designers to start our businesses and employ people because jobs are scarce at the moment.
“We make good quality clothes, affordable to everyone,” said Nkosi.
The well-attended event was sponsored by ABSA and Nedbank, among other companies. Deputy principal Jabu Nkosi told attendees that Gert Sibande TVET College wanted to be innovative and the purpose of the event was to make the college stand out.
“Gert Sibande TVET College wants to reach the needs of the community. I want to urge learners to have some skill that would make their lives different because if you have a skill, people will depend on you to make something for them. In this case, people always want traditional clothing for weddings or any event with a theme.”
