Petra Diamonds transforms gumboots into school shoes

“This initiative reflects our commitment to sustainability and community upliftment. By turning waste into opportunity, we reduce our environmental footprint and provide tangible support to the learners in our communities.”

Petra Diamonds officially launched its Gumboot Recycling Project, which reduces plastic waste while supporting education through its Schools’ Support Programme.

According to Petra Diamonds, this initiative, led by Cullinan Diamond Mine’s Health, Safety, Environmental and Social Performance departments, transforms used gumboots into durable school shoes.

The first batch of repurposed shoes was officially handed to learners at the Leeuwfontein Primary Farm School, Region 5, on September 20, marking a significant step toward sustainability and community support.

“At Cullinan Diamond Mine (CDM), responsible mining is central to the operation, with a strong focus on minimising environmental impact through responsible waste management.

“As part of this commitment, CDM employees contributed to this initiative by donating their used gumboots, which were cleaned, reprocessed and transformed into eco-friendly school shoes,” stated Petra Diamonds in a media statement.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to sustainability and community upliftment. By turning waste into opportunity, we reduce our environmental footprint and provide tangible support to the learners in our communities. This project is a testament to our purpose of creating abundance from rarity,” said Petra Diamonds’ CEO, Richard Duffy.

According to the CDM, it remains dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for local communities and continues to seek innovative ways to support and invest in regional development.
