Bronkhorstspruit Ward councillor sleeps it off in cell
Vusi Mabena appeared in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was released on bail.
Ward 102 Clr Vusi Mabena was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in Bronkhorstspruit.
Mabena was among more than a dozen motorists nabbed on October 12. Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk, spokesperson for the police in the Tshwane area, confirmed the arrest.
“Mabena appeared in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was released on bail,” said Van Dyk.
Streeknews approached Mabena for comment to which he replied via WhatsApp: “I am glad you know what you know; go ahead and print whatever you need to print.”
Makhanani Ngobeni, councillor liaison and stakeholder relations in the City of Tshwane (CoT) replied in an email to Streeknews on Tuesday.

“The office of the chief whip is not aware of the matter, we will, however, follow up and revert on this accordingly,” said Ngobeni.
Mabena is an ANC member and Streeknews therefore also tried to get a comment from the ANC leadership in the CoT.
Calls to Eugene Modise, deputy mayor, and three other MMCs from the ANC remained unanswered.
An email was also sent to Modise, but we received no comment when going to print. The DA’s Tshwane caucus chairperson, Jacqui Uys, said public representatives should be exemplary members of society.
“Unfortunately, the ANC does not appreciate this responsibility, and their representatives often think they are above the law,” concluded Uys.
