Municipality, schools celebrate Hand Washing Day in eMbalenhle

Day is celebrated worldwide in November.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality and Mpumalanga’s Water and Sanitation Department (MWSD) celebrated Global Hand Washing Day at the eMbalenhle Kgotso Hall on November 6.

This day, celebrated annually on October 15, motivates and mobilises people globally to wash their hands with soap and water at critical times while raising awareness of hand washing with soap and water’s importance as a key approach to disease prevention.

Dudu Sifunda, the head of operations at the MWSD, said the celebration would instil the practice of washing hands with soap and water to curb life-threatening diseases among communities, households, hospitals, schools and workplaces.

“We want to pass a message of awareness to our community on the importance of hand washing and encourage everybody worldwide to take the hygiene issue seriously to prevent diseases.

“As we are here at the Govan Mbeki Municipality, we are aware that there are water and sanitation challenges, and we are working together to resolve them,” said Sifunda.

He encouraged the attendees to wash their hands after they use the toilet before they touch food, and after they touch their faces.
Various eMbalenhle primary schools attended the celebration and performed activities about hand washing.
