Illegal dumping ensues after dumpsite shutdown

With Morgenzon's dumpsite closed due to capacity issues, illegal dumping and waste burning persist as the municipality waits for a delayed closure licence to relocate the site.

The Morgenzon dumpsite has been closed down for several months due to the site having reached it’s maximum capacity.

According to Lubabalo Majenge, communications officer for the Lekwa Local Municipality, weekly waste collections have been scheduled in Morgenzon.

Waste collected from Morgenzon is then disposed of at the Standerton dumpsite. Though this initiative has been taken, instances of illegal dumping continue to occur outside the Morgenzon dumpsite.

It was also reported that several shopkeepers dispose of their waste by burning it in front of their shops. Majenge indicated in previous correspondence that a new location for the dumpsite has already been chosen.

However, the municipality is waiting on a closure licence.

“The application for a closure licence is taking longer than expected and this is affecting the project’s commencement,” explained Majenge.

The project to relocate and rehabilitate the Morgenzon dumpsite will continue after the licence has been issued.
