New township handed over to LLM

GSDM appointed a team to handle every aspect of the process – from planning to zoning and environmental assessments.

The Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) handed over the completed Morgenzon Ext 5 township to the Lekwa Local Municipality (LLM) on April 4.

The township contains 241 housing units.

Executive mayor of the GSDM, Walter Mngomezulu, stated this milestone marks a significant step towards addressing the housing backlog in Morgenzon.

A request for this township was made in 2019 and has come to life six years later.

GSDM appointed a team to handle every aspect of the process – from planning to zoning and environmental assessments.

The LLM promised to preserve the township by providing essential infrastructure updates and opportunities for the residents of Lekwa.

Because of the Morgenzon dumpsite location, the GSDM selected a different site for this project. A portion of the farm Tweefontein was curated for the township.

The plan for this township includes two institutional sites, one public space and one business site.

“Currently, we are waiting for the Surveyor General to announce the budget for water and sanitation in the area,” said Mngomezulu.

We will move people to the site as soon as we complete the water reticulation set-up.

Mngomezulu commended the team in charge of building the area, stating they have done a good job in actualising the vision for the township.

This project did not cost a cent to the LLM; it was done free of charge.
